The former Stromness Whaling Station on South Georgia Island operated from 1913 to 1961 when it was abandoned due to a lack of whales.

Sir Ernest Shackleton arrived on foot at the Stromness Whaling Station on South Georgia Island in May 1916 after a harrowing 1,300-kilometer small boat journey from Elephant Island.
